How is Horizons at CDS Funded?

Find out more about our unique private/public partnership that helps make our program sustainable and successful.

Horizons at Carolina Day is a public/private partnership based upon the model established by the original Horizons program of New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1964. In 2017, after reviewing the impressive results of other programs nationwide, Carolina Day School’s board voted to bring a Horizons program to their Asheville campus. By combining forces with nearly 60 other Horizons programs around the country, Horizons at Carolina Day became part of an innovative and effective network that aims to close the achievement gap and expand opportunity for more children every year. Like all Horizons host schools, Carolina Day School (CDS) signed on to this project knowing that Horizons at Carolina Day would carry out its own fundraising activities to sustain the program.

Although not providing any direct funding to Horizons, CDS gives significant in-kind support to the program in the form of classroom space, administrative support, consultation with leadership staff, and use of school equipment. CDS students, parents, and teachers also fill important volunteer roles in the program, which both enhances the curriculum and helps keep costs down. Horizons at Carolina Day is also supported by partnerships with the YMCA of Western North Carolina and the NC Summer Foods Program, which significantly reduce costs. Our funding comes from individual gifts, foundation grants, and corporate donations. Some of our supporters include The Duke Energy Foundation, The Wells Fargo Foundation, The Ramble Charitable Fund, and the Omni Grove Park Inn. Although we absolutely value our foundation and corporate funders, individual gifts, ranging from $10-$10,000, are our most significant form of support.
