How COVID-19 School Closures Affected Children
Posted on
When schools closed mid-March, we immediately became concerned about how this out-of-school time would impact the families in our program.
Preliminary data has been coming out that confirms a significant learning loss has taken place. Researchers estimate that students from schools that closed around March 15 could lose 50% of their learning gains made in math and 30% of what they learned in reading during the 2019-2020 school year. What's worse: students in lower grades may now be nearly a full year behind in math compared to what we would observe in normal learning conditions. This preliminary research indicates the essential nature of academic support programs like Horizons, especially during this time of disruption and trauma. We find inspiration in our close connection with our Horizons families, knowing that our children will be in the program for years to come so we can work together to fill any gaps that arise.
