Serving students from low-income families in Asheville, NC, on the campus of Carolina Day School

Volunteer Opportunities

Inspiring. Building. Transforming.

Won't you join us?

Horizons National is a summer education program for low-income students in grades K - 12. The mission of the program is to change the life trajectory of low-income students by instilling in them the joy of learning, the skills for success, and the inspiration to realize their dreams. Horizons students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and they reflect the diversity of their local community. When they first come to Horizons, most students are performing below grade level. Our summer program includes project-based learning, dance, art, music, swimming, and field trips. Volunteers and interns will have a chance to interact with students and support the program in a variety of meaningful ways. All who join the Horizons family can expect an enriching, hands on, joyful, and potentially life-changing experience.

The 2019 Horizons Carolina Day Program runs from June 17-July 26 (off July 4 & 5). Volunteer hours are 8am-3:45pm. For special time arrangements, contact Interns and volunteers may participate in 2 weeks, 3 weeks or the full 6 weeks of the program. This will be our second year, so you will have the opportunity to work with 15 returning first grade or 15 new grade K students! Students return each summer as we add a new class of of younger students. Volunteers who stick with the program will have the opportunity to build deep, lasting relationships and have a significant impact on the lives of these children.
